Government, non-government and voluntary organizations observed the International Literacy Day-2014 here yesterday with a fresh vow to make the nation free from the curse of illiteracy.
Marking the day, the district administration organized a colourful rally, discussion meeting, film show and essay competition for the students.
A large number of people, including different government, non- government and development organizations, attended the rally which was brought out from the Moni Bazar crossing and ended at Shilpakala Academy auditorium after parading some of the main thoroughfares. Later, a discussion meeting was held at the auditorium highlighting various aspects of proper education and building skilled human resources. Commissioner of Rajshahi division Helaluddin Ahmed addressed the discussion as chief guest with Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi Mejbah Uddin Chowdhury in the chair.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (Education, Development and ICT) SM Tuhinur Alam, Assistant Director of Department of Primary Education Abul Kalam Azad and Assistant Director of Department of Non Formal Primary Education Anwar Kamal also spoke as special guests. The speakers said primary teachers and social workers can play vital roles in gearing up the literacy campaign throughout the country to achieve the millennium development goals.
They stressed on creating more awareness among the people to make the literacy campaign a success. Besides, they underscored the need for a collective effort of all concerned to supplement the government efforts to make the country’s education system time befitting and need-oriented. There is no alternative to spreading the light of education among all, particularly the poor and marginal sections of the society, so that they could play their due roles to take the nation ahead towards the path of prosperity.
BSS from Rangpur adds: Speakers at a post-rally discussion today said there is no alternative to illiteracy-free educated and skilled human resources for attaining overall development in the process of building a digitised middle income country. They were addressing the discussion jointly organised by district administration and District Non Formal Education (NFE) Bureau in association with different NGOs in observance of the International Literacy Day-2014 at the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner in the city. The day was observed through various programmes with the theme of ‘Literacy and Sustainable Development’ here today as elsewhere in the country and the world as a whole.
Earlier, Deputy Commissioner Farid Ahammad led a huge colourful rally that was brought out in the city streets with participations of officials of different government and non-government organizations, teachers, students, educationists, professionals, socio-cultural activists and elite of the city. With Assistant Director of the District NFE Bureau Musfikur Rahman in the chair, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Education & ICT) Dr ATM Mahbub Ul Karim attended the discussion as the chief guest.
Divisional Deputy Director for Primary Education Mohiuddin Ahmed Talukder, Senior District Information Officer Monzur-e-Mowla and Programme Manager (Filed Coordination) of RDRS Bangladesh, also addressed, among others.
