Eminent experts from home and abroad, officials and academicians from different organizations at a workshop underscored the need for well drainage management system and effective measures for the capital to mitigate the present water logging and flooding situation within the city.
As Dhaka experiences serious water logging condition during intense rain in the monsoon and implementation of the recommendations based on the Collaborative Research on Flood Resilience in Urban areas (CORFU), a major project involving 15 European and Asian Institutions funded by a grant from the European Commission, may help us to bring new quality to flood management strategies in the urban areas, they explained at the workshop.
The experts came up with these recommendations at the workshop titled “Collaborative Research on Flood Resilience in Urban areas, arranged by Institute of Water Modelling (IWM) at Spectra Convention centre here.
The overall aim of CORFU is to enable European and Asian partners to learn from each other through joint investigation, development, implementation and dissemination of short and medium term strategies that will enable more scientifically sound management of the consequences of urban flooding in the future, said the workshop.
State Minister for Water Resources Md Nazrul Islam attended the workshop as guest of honour and secretary of the water resource ministry Dr Zafar Ahmed Khan attended the program as special guest.
The workshop was chaired by Prof Dr Monowar Hossain, executive director of IWM.
A number of presentations on Dhaka Case Study were delivered in the programme. Dr Slobodan Djordjevic, University of Exeter, UK and SM Mahbubur Rahman, Director (water resource programme), IWM presented briefs on the research and Dhaka Case Study respectively.
