BSS, Dhaka :
Citing climate change as the most challenging issue for sustainable development, Planning Minister A H M Mustafa Kamal on Thursday urged experts to find out effective measures to face the impact of natural disasters. “We have to find out a way-out to mitigate the losses caused by the climate change,” he told the closing ceremony of a project tilted “Poverty, Environment and Climate Mainstreaming” organised by the General Economic Division (GED) of Planning Commission at the NEC Conference Room in city’s Sher- e-Banglanagar. Referring to a research report, Kamal said Bangladesh is losing US$ 2.2 billion every year due to disaster. The private sector that contributes 80 percent of the country’s GDP should be involved in tackling the climate change impact, he added. The GED started the UNDP-funded Poverty, Environment and Climate Mainstreaming project involving US$ 1 million in July 2010.
The project aimed at assessing the impact of climate change on our poverty alleviation activities.
