National Social Services Day-2019 was celebrated in the district as elsewhere in the country on Thursday with a call to provide state services to the door steps of the underprivileged people of the society. This year’s theme of the day was “Sonar Banglaay Mujib Barshe, Samaj Kalyan Egie Chale”.
Marking the day, district administration and district social service office jointly chalked out elaborate programmes. In the morning, a colorful rally led by deputy director of local government section of deputy commissioner (DC) office Rokhsana Begum was brought out from Independence Square that ended in front of Zila Shilpakala Academy (ZSA) after parading the main roads of the town. Later, a discussion was also held at the auditorium of ZSA with Deputy Director of Department of Social Services Emdadul Haque Pramanik in the chair.
DD Rokhsana Begum addressed the meeting as the chief guest on behalf of DC Abdul Matin.
The function was also addressed, among others, assistant commissioner Nusrat Jahan, medical officer of civil surgeon office Dr. Al Mahmudul Mimo, assistant director of the department Kamrul Hasan Sarker, town socialservices officer Mizanur Rahman Mollick, Sadar upazila social services officer Nasir Uddin, office secretary of district Awami League AKM SaifulAlam Saka, and coordinator of SKS Foundation Ashraful Alam.
Chief guest DD Rokhsana Begum in her speeches urged the officials and the employees of the DSS to be more serious and punctual in discharging their duties and reaching their departmental services to selected people easily without any disturbance.
Later, a cultural function was also held at ZSA where the local artistes rendered songs and performed dance to entertain the people marking the day.
A large number of people, including district and upazila level officials, NGO activists, social workers and journalists, took part in the programmes.
BSS from Rajshahi adds: Speakers at a discussion here on Thursday unequivocally called for expediting the social services for the welfare of the people with special needs and other underprivileged sections of the society.
They put emphasis on ensuring transparency and accountability in all the welfare-oriented social service activities so that the target group of people could derive total benefits of the welfare programmes.
Department of Social Services (DSS) and District administration jointlyorganised the discussion at Shilpakala Academy auditorium in observance of the National Social Service Day-2020.
On the occasion, cheques worth Taka 2.50 lakh were handed over to five patients suffering from cancer and five less-income people were given blankets.
Chaired by Divisional Director of DSS AKM Sarwar Jahan, the meeting was addressed, among others, by Deputy Commissioner Hamidul Haque, Superintendent of Police Muhammad Shahidullah, Member of National Disabled Welfare Council Mozammel Haque, Social Worker Shaheen Akter and DSS Deputy Director Hasina Momtaz.
The deputy commissioner said the government is implementing various social safety net programs for overall development of the public in general and urged the officials and staff concerned to discharge their duties with utmost sincerity and honesty for a successful implementation of the programmes.
Earlier, a rally was brought out from the C&B Crossing marking the day.The rally paraded some thoroughfares before being ended at the meeting venue. Nearly 100 government and non-government officials and employees and volunteers joined the programmes.
