BSS, Dhaka :
Awami League Advisory Council member and former Railway Minister Suranjit Sengupta, MP, on Friday called upon constitutionally responsible persons to take measure to execute the capital punishment against war criminal Kamaruzzaman expeditiously.
“The War Crimes Tribunal is a court of international standard for trial of the war criminals, which can be recognised as a model in the world. Though there is no scope for appeal for those punished for war crimes in the war crimes tribunals anywhere in the world, there is a provision for appeal in Bangladesh. However, there is no scope for review after the verdict of the Appellate Division in accordance with Article 47 of the constitution,” he said.
Speaking at a discussion as the chief guest in the city, Suranjit Sengupta, a senior parliamentarian of the ruling Awami League, said, “I would like to call upon the constitutionally responsible personalities in the Judicial and Executive divisions of the government to take immediate initiative to reach the verdict at the jail gate and execute the verdict expeditiously.”
Nouka Samarthak Goshthy, an organisation of the supporters of Awami League’s poll symbol ‘Boat’, organised the discussion at Institution of Diploma Engineers auditorium at Kakrail with its organising secretary Sajjad Hossain in the chair.
Awami League Advisory Council member Satish Chandra Roy, Shirin Sharmin Poonam, MP, and president of the organisation Humayun Kabir Mizi were the discussants, among others.
Terming Tarique Rahman’s various remarks in London tantamount to sedition , Suranjit Sengupta said, “BNP has been isolated from the people gradually for distortion of history and distasteful remarks of Tarique Rahman that also hurt peoples’ sentiment.”
The senor Awami League leader also termed Tarique as another burden on BNP like that of Jamaat.
