Int'l Women's Day observed: Call to ensure equal rights of women

The International Women’s Day-2014 was observed through various programmes in different districts in a befitting manner on Saturday with the theme of ‘Equality for women is progress for all” and a fresh call for ensuring equal rights of women .Our Correspondents and agencies report:
Chapainawabganj Correspondent reports : The International Women’s Day was observed in a befitting manner in Chapainawabganj on Saturday.
Different programmes like rally, discussion meeting, fair and cultural functions were held on the occasion. A colourful rally was brought out from the deputy commissioner’s office premises in the morning. After parading the main roads of the town the rally ended at Chapainawabganj Municipality Park. Representatives from Chapainawabganj district administration, Department of Women Affairs, Chapainawabganj Municipality, Committee of the Concerned Citizens (CCC), Chapainawabganj of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), BRAC, ASSEDO and other NGOs and educational institutions took part in the rally.A discussion meeting was held in the evening at Chapainawabganj municipality park with sadar upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) Dr. Chitralekha Naznin in the chair. Among others, deputy commissioner Sardar Sarafat Ali as chief guest, mayor of Chapainawabganj municipality Maolana Abdul Matin, additional deputy commissioner (General) Dr. KM Quamruzzaman Selim and assistant superintendent of police Wahedul Hoque spoke on the occasion.
Gouripur(Mymensingh) Correspondent reports: The International Women’s Day was observed in Gouripur Upazila of Mymensingh district demanding equal rights, safe mobility for women’s, and women’s safety in all levels of the society. Government and non-government organization chalked out various programmes ncluding rallies, discussions and cultural programmes to mark the day with this year’s slogan ‘Equality for Women is progress for all’.
A rally was brought out at 10 am from the Upazila Parishad that ended at the same place.
Women from different professionals took part at the rally along with colourful festoon, banner and playcard. Later, a discussion was held at upazila premises on Saterday.
Manikganj Correspondent says: Shibalaya Upazila Women Affairs Department with the assistance of Upazila Administration and Local NGOs arranged a colourful rally, cultural function, discussion meeting and a day long fair to mark the international Woman’s Day.
 The rally paraded different roads of the upazila. A discussion meeting was held at the upazila premises where Women Affairs Officer Parveen Begum in the chair. UNO AKM Galiv Khan was the chief guest. Upazila Rural Development Officer Hamida Ahmed, NGO worker Subas Majumder, Sudip Ghosh Basu.Among others, spoke at the meeting. BRAC Upazila Manager (Micro Finance) Md. Momin Mia, WASH Manager Md, Kharshed Alam, Surjer Hashi Clinic Manager Mokammel Hossain Nannu, representatives of different NGOs, UP members were present at the function.
Narsingdi Correspondent reports: Speakers at a rally here said comprehensive efforts and changed mindset of all concerned could eradicate all shorts of violence against women to establish equal rights and dignity of the women folk in the society. They were addressing a discussion meeting on the occasion of International Women’s Day 2014 organised by District Administration and District Women Affairs Department held at local Shilpakala Academy here on Saturday. Deputy Commissioner Obaidul Azam attended the discussion meeting as chief guest with Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Suriaya Begum in the chair District Women Affairs Officer Omah Mahamuda Khanum Presented the welcome speech.The meeting were addressed among others by Former principal of Narsingdi Government College Surjakantha Das, District Muktijuddah commander Motaleb pathen ,BSS District correspondent Mohammad Abu Taher,Executive Director of CDMS and Joyeeta of Narsingdi Sofura Begum, Women member of Alokbali Union Parishad Monni Aktar and President of Zila Protibandhi Samity Rokeya Begum .
Barisal Correspondent reports: Exceptional programme like boat-race of women was held with great enthusiasm at Kadambari area in Agoiljhara upazila of Barisal on Poisarhut River Saturday morning to observe the International Women’s Day . “Taranga’, a non-government organisation working in Agoiljhara, Gournadi upazilas under Barisal and adjacent Kotalipara upazila in Gopalganj, Kalkini upazila in Madaripur districts, organized the boat-race of 14 female teams of 160 oars.
The members of women boat-race teams named after native flowers of the country, wearing colorful dresses, dancing and playing musical instruments operated their boats.
Local people specially the female spectators and some foreigner guests enjoyed the boat race assembling on both sides of the river and inspired their choicer teams by playing musical instruments, clapping, and slogans.
After hard competitions in 1.5 kilometers long two rounds from Poisarhut Tarango office ghat to Trimukhai Bazar , ‘Golap” team led by boat-woman Usha Adfhikari, ‘Beli’ team led by Fulmala Roy and ‘Jui’ team led by Sarswati Joydhar received the first, second and third prizes respectively.
At the end of the competition color television, LCD monitor sets were distributed among the three winner teams and consolation prizes among the other participants.
BSS from Rangpur says: The International Women’s Day was observed here yesterday with the theme of ‘Equality for women is progress for all” and a fresh call for ensuring equal rights of women in building a middle income Bangladesh. The Day was observed with a fresh vow for ending all sorts of repressions, ensuring emancipation of the women in development, economy, governance, policy-making matters, different professions and every sector for building happy and prosperous nation.
The district administration, Department of Women’s Affairs (DWA),government departments, different NGOs, socio-cultural and professional organisations and bodies chalked out elaborate daylong programmes in observance the Day.
The programmes included colourful rallies participated by hundreds of women, girls, adolescents, students from different educational institutions, NGO activists, officials and employees, seminars, daylong special fair, lighting candle, discussions and cultural functions.The district administration, DWA and dozens of NGOs, development and donor organisations including CARE Bangladesh organised a colourful rally that paraded the streets of the divisional city with placards, banners, posters and festoons. The main discussion meeting was organised at Town hall auditorium in the city with Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Shahidul Islam in the chair.
Deputy Commissioner Farid Ahammad attended and addressed the discussion as the chief guest.Deputy Director of the DWA Shameem Akhter Banu, Principal Fakhrul Anam Benzu, valiant freedom fighter Akbar Hossain, Head of Programme Coordination of RDRS Bangladesh Monjusree Saha, Dr Samorpita Ghosh Tanya, NGO executive Sarothi Rani Saha, educationist Marhamatunnesa and women activist Rebecca Sultana Benu addressed as the special guests.
BSS from Panchagarh says: International Women’s Day-2014 was observed in Panchagarh on Saturday. District Administration and District Women Affairs Department organized the Day’s programme. A discussion was held where Deputy Commissioner Md Salehuddin was present as the chief guest with Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Shamsul Alam in the chair. Civil Surgeon Dr Mozammel Haque and Superintendent of Police Md Abul Kalam Azad addressed the meeting as special guests. District Women Affair Officer Morium Kkanom gave the welcome speech.
BSS from Faridpur reports: International Women’s Day, a global program to ensure rights of women as well as for the emancipation of women was observed here on Saturday in a befitting manner. In this connection district administration and Women Affairs directorate jointly organized a colorful rally, discussion meeting and a fair. The discussion meeting was held at local Kabi Jasimuddin hall. Deputy Commissioner Abu Hena Morshed Zaman was the chief guest in the discussion which was chaired by ADC(Gen) Md. Jahangir Hossain. DC Morshed Zaman told the meeting that the present government has taken several initiatives through legislation to ensure the rights of women in the society and prevent violence against women.

of violence, disparity and discrimination. Marking the day, district administration and women affairs department brought out a colorful rally from C&B Crossing and paraded the city streets before being converged into a discussion held at Shishu Academy conference hall with Deputy Commissioner.
