Deputy Speaker of Jaitya Sangsad M Fazle Rabbi Miah emphasized the need for enhancing and sustained cooperation between parliaments and the United Nations for achieving the agenda 2030 that would be adopted by global leaders at the end of this month in New York.
“Bangladesh has achieved remarkable progress in most of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and welcomes the new development agenda that has emerged with 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 targets,” he said this on Wednesday at the 4th World Conference of Speakers at the General Assembly Hall of United Nations Headquarters in New York, a message received here on Thursday said.
Inter-Parliamentary Union president and Member of Parliament of Bangladesh Saber Hossain Chowdhury presided over the conference while about 180 parliamentary leaders including 35 Deputy Speakers from 140 countries took part in the conference.
39 countries including Bangladesh made their statements in the plenary held on September 2.
Expressing gratitude to the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the deputy speaker said “Bangladesh fought for the cause of liberation and achieved independence under the dynamic leadership of Bangabandhu.”
He also said “the National Parliament of Bangladesh represents the solemn expression of the will of the people. A good number of young people have been elected as the Member of Parliament. In line with the constitutional commitment, Bangladesh remains strong advocate for promoting and protecting democracy and democratic values and principles at the international level.”
“Under the leadership of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh will be moving forward and transferring into a middle income country to build Sonar Bangla as dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman” the deputy speaker added.
The Deputy Speaker also attended the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Speakers Conference. He gave importance on forming a SAARC parliamentarian forum which could oversee specific two or three goals under SDGs relevant with democracy and people empowerment.
