Call to enhance animal resource related services to growers

Speakers at a discussion here yesterday asked the local service providers to reach the animal resource related necessary services to the grassroots growers for boosting the animal resources, particularly livestock and poultry.
They viewed more importance should be given on extending the requisite services like primary treatment, vaccination and farm management so that the farmers are benefited.
They were addressing a certificate-giving ceremony of a daylong training for the Local Service Providers (LSP) of animal resources at Ashrai Training Center in the district.
Helvetas Swiss Intercooperation Bangladesh and Department of Animal Resources jointly organized the training for 29 LSPs from different areas of the district.
“Samriddhi: Good Practices in Enhancing Rural Prosperity through Employment and Income in Bangladesh project supported the training. The project is being implemented with financial support from Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.
Divisional Deputy Director of Department of Animal Resources Mohir Uddin addressed the session as chief guest with Archana Nath, Regional Coordinator of the project, in the chair.
District Animal Resource Officer Dr Mijanur Rahman, Assistant Director of Artificial Insemination Center ATM Fazlul Haque, Divisional Assistant Director Kollyan Kumar Fouzder and Project Coordinator Giash Uddin Talukder also spoke.
The speakers stressed the need for uplifting the livestock sector for food security, self-employment and poverty reduction. He also called for due importance on adopting modern technology, promotion of high yielding varieties and farmers training to overcome the crisis.
Besides, large-scale farming of fodder could further develop the livestock sector to contribute immensely in fulfilling the protein deficiency in the country, he added.
He added that the contribution of the livestock sector is immense in terms of meeting up the protein deficiency and socio economic development and said there is no alternative to elevate the sector.
In her remarks, Archana Nath says through establishing service contract points in their respective areas more than 700 LSPs deliver requisite training, advice and inputs services to the producers after taking training on chicken rearing.
Various public institutions and agencies provide extension services to the LSPs, who earn on an average Taka 1,500 per month. In practice, they disseminate different modern technology to the producers through setting demonstration plot within the working households.
