A discussion meeting titled ‘Present perspective of Haldi river and out duty’ was held at Chittagong press club auditorium yesterday morning .
Vice Chancellor of East Delta University Prof . Dr. Mohammad Sekander Khan presided over it while the Vice Chancellor of Chittagong University Prof Dr Iftekharuddin Chowdhury was present as Chief Guest.
Fishermen of Halda River zone, local representatives participated the discussions. Halda Expert Dr. Manzurul Kibria in his brief deliverations demanded declaration of the Halda as national river.
In the meet, Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong Mesbahuddin and the General Secretary of Chittagong Union of Journalists Md. Ali were accorded a reception for playing effective role to save the Halda River . Former President of Chittagong Press Club Abu Sufian, President of TV Journalists Association Shamsul Hoque Hyderi, District Admin Officer Khorshed Alam, Prof. Idrish ali, Prof. Abu Noman were present in it as discussants.
Associate Professor of Chittagong University Dr. Manzurul Kibria presented the keynote paper in it. Joint Secretary of Chittagong Press Club Chowdhury Farid conducted the seminar as moderator.
The speakers in their deliberations emphaisised the need to save Halda river from ruination .
They said Haldariver is the life line of Chittagong and about 65 lakh people of the Chittagong use water from Halda River. The further disclosed that about Tk.800 crores earn from the fish roe of Halda River every year.
The seminar demanded stopping of city waste dumping through two canals in to Halda to avoid pollution of the river water . To save the aquamarine resources of the halda river, govt initiatives should be taken to stop lifting of sand through dredger and dumping of wastes from city , the speakers added.
