Discussants at a views exchange meeting here on Sunday underlined the importance of creating awareness among fish traders and fishermen for ensuring supply of formalin-free fish in local markets to save people from fatal diseases.
They urged the authorities concerned to check the use of formalin in fish through conducting regular mobile courts in haat and bazars for greater interest of the people and declare the Sadar upazila as formalin-free.
The meeting was arranged by Department of Fisheries in celebration of National Fisheries Week-2014 at the deputy commissioner’s office conference room.
With Deputy Commissioner of Narsingdi Abu Hena Morshed Zaman in the chair, the meeting was also addressed, among others, by Additional Deputy Commissioner (general) Suriaya Begum, and District Fisheries Officer Chowdhury Mohammad Abul Farah.
A number of fish food traders, fishermen, district level officials, civil society members, journalists, community leaders and elites of the town attended the meeting The speakers narrated the harmful impacts of formalin tainted foodstuff including fish.
They called upon the fish traders and fishermen to refrain from using formalin and urged their community leaders and the consumers to work unitedly for ensuring supply of formalin-free fish to local markets.
