National Committee for Protection of Oil-Gas and Mineral Resources, Electricity Sector and Ports (NCPOGMREP) urged people to build a mass movement to protect the Sundarbans and natural marine resources of the Bay of Bengal. It came up with the call at a demonstration programme held on Monday in front of the Jatiya Press Club.
Chaired by Committee convener Engr Sheikh Mohammad Shahidullah, the rally was addressed, among others, by its member secretary Prof Anu Mohammad and central leader Ruhin Hossain Prince. Demanding suspension of Asia Energy and full implementation of Phulbari six-point agreement, the committee leaders said the government must suspend the process of signing agreements on oil-gas blocks of the Bay of Bengal.
They said the government is planning to sign deals with foreign companies on oil-gas blocks of the Bay of Bengal, but all the agreements will go against the national interest.
