National Sanitation Month observed: Call to achieve 100 pc sanitation coverage by 2015

National Sanitation Month-2014 is being celebrated in all the seven upazilas of the district from October 15 with a call to achieve 100 percent sanitation coverage target by 2015 through stopping the open defecation.
To celebrate the Month in a befitting manner, district and upazila administrations and Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) have jointly taken up elaborate programmes here in cooperation with Policy Support unit of Local Government Division.
The programmes include holding of rallies, discussion meeting and motivational campaign and rendering songs and staging dramas on sanitation at public and important places of the district.
The programmes also include decorating roads and islands with posters and banners with slogans on sanitation, showing video film and arrangement of essay writing competition and washing hands.
A colorful rally was brought out recently in Sundarganj upazila town of the district marking the sanitation month.
Monjurul Islam Liton MP led the rally that ended on the premises of the upazila headquarters building after parading the main roads of the town.
Later, a discussion meeting was also held there with sub assistant engineer of DPHE M. Rubel Miah in the chair.
The local lawmaker said the NGOs, members of civil society and affluent section of the society would have to play the key role to achieve 100 percent sanitation coverage here within the stipulated time fixed by the government.
He also urged the field level government officials concerned and public representatives to engage the community and religious leaders of grass root level in the campaign so that it could be turned into a social movement to attain the cherished goal.
Staff Reporter from Kishoreganj reports : Kishoreganj District Administration and Public Health Engineering Department jointly arranged rally, discussion, seminar, film show and hand washing programme marking the National Sanitation Month on Tuesday.
A discussion meeting was held at local Collectorate Conference room on Wednesday noon. Deputy Commissioner SM Alam was attended as chief guest with executive Engineer Md Tozammel Haque in the chair.
It was addressed among others by Deputy Director of local Government Emdadul Haque Chwohdury, Principal (Retd) Professor Rafiqul Islam, Deputy Civil Surjeon Dr Shahidul Alam, CAB President Alam Sarowar Tito, Abdul Hossion of Plan Bangladesh, Iqbal Ahamed of UNDP and Shankon Kumar Das of BRAN, hand washing Programme Manager.
BSS from Faridpur adds: National Sanitation month -2014, a part of the national programme to create awareness about sanitation and hygiene factors among people, was observed here yesterday in a befitting manner.
District administration and Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) in association with BRAC WASH programme jointly organized a rally and discussion meeting in the town.
A colorful rally was brought out in the town consisting people from all strata of life. People participating in the rally carried various placards and posters with messages on proper sanitation and pure drinking water for building a healthy nation.
After the rally a discussion was held in the conference room of DC of Faridpur with DPHE Executive Engineer Bidhan Chandra Dey in the chair. ADC (gen) Abdur Rashid was present at the discussion as the chief guest.
The country has achieved tremendous success in sanitation coverage improving public health indexes in rural areas in recent years, speakers at a post- rally discussion said here on Tuesday.
They said the improved sanitation facilities with access to pure drinking water for the rural people can reduce the extent of water-borne diseases and child deaths pushing the nation further ahead towards the path of progress and prosperity.
BRAC WASH regional manager Md. Harunur Rashid, BRAC representative Md. Jahangir Alom, NGO personnel Fazlul Hadi Sabbir, school students and member of the civil society, among others, spoke at the meeting.
