World Press Freedom Day observed: Call for quality journalism by ensuring rights, safety of journos

World Press Freedom Day was observed in Barisal on Wednesday calling for developing quality journalism by ensuring rights and safety of journalists to develop the society and country.
Barisal Reporters Unity arranged a procession from Ashwini Kumar Hall and a discussion meeting at the BRU premises on the occasion.
Barisal Metropolitan Press Club and Barisal Television Media Association expressing their solidarities also participated in the programmes attended by the journalists of print and electronics media.
The discussion programme was presided over by Anisur Rahman Swapan, BRU president and conducted by BRU former secretary Bappi Majumdar.
It was addressed among others by Kamrul Ahsan, BRU secretary, Abul Kalam Azad, president Barisal Metropolitan Press Club, Humayun Kabir, president Barisal Television Media Association.
The discussants quoting the directives of UN to promote and protect press freedom called for quality journalism which enables citizens to make correct decisions, expose injustice, corruption and the abuse of power.
They highlighting the theme of World Press Freedom Day 2017, said journalism must be able to thrive towards developments of society and nation by better reporting with gender equality, media safety in the digital age.
They also stressed on enabling proper environment in which they can work independently and without undue interference.
They discussing about the issues related attacks and harassments against journalists and media underlined need for “quality journalism” with accurate and independent reporting adjusting with technological changes and commercial developments.
The participants opined that digital safety has become a topic of growing concern because digital communications makes it difficult for journalists to protect themselves and their sources.
Bagerhat Correspondent adds: Under the auspices of Bagerhat Press Club, the World Press Freedom Day was celebrated at Bagerhat district town in a befitting manner on Wednesday.
On the occasion, a colourful rally that was brought out from Bagerhat Press Club in the morning paraded the main roads of the district town.
 The rally was led by freedom fighter Shaikh Kamruzzaman Tuku, Chairman of Bagerhat Zila Parishad and General Secretary of Bagerhat district unit of Bangladesh Awami Leage and Pankaj Chandra Roy, Police Super of Bagerhat. It was attended by all the members of Bagerhat Press Club and the local working journalists.
After the end of the rally a lively discussion was held in the auditorium of Bagerhat Press Club with its President Ahad Uddin Haidar in the chair. The president explained the need and importance of observing the day while he was delivering his address of welcome. Freedom fighter Shaikha Kamruzzaman. Zila Parishad Chairman of Bagerhat while he was addressing the discussion as the chief guest told, journalists can play an important role in establishing democratic rule a country if they are patriot and sincere in discharging their duties. He added, journalist are enjoying more freedom in the country during AL Govt. in comparison with all other governments. He requested the journalists to publish objective and constructive reports in their medias for the greater interest of the country. Pankaj Chandra Roy, Police Super, Bagerhat and Kamruzzaman, District Public Relation Officer addressed the discussion as special guests. The discussion was also addressed by Abdul Baki Talukdar, General Secretary of Bagerhat Press Club and journalist Adv. M. Mozaffor Hossain, Prof. ABM. Mosharraf Husain and Babul Sardar.
