UNB, Dhaka :
Speakers at a discussion programme on Monday called upon for ensuring justice for establishing the human rights of women.
The speakers made the call during a programme organized by Bangladesh Mahila Parishad (BMP) at the Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Auditorium, said a press release.
Addressing the programme as the chief guest, Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain said, though women are increasingly empowered in the country, violence against women and children is also on the rise.
Till March of 2018, 1.66 lakh cases have been filed in connection of violence against women and children, he said.
Calling for a social movement to prevent such violence, the Chief Justice urged everyone to work to ensure justice and establish human rights.
Chairman of Bangladesh Supreme Court Legal Aid Committee,
Justice M Enayetur Rahim said, it is the duty of the state to ensure basic rights for its citizens and the court must monitor if the duty is being performed properly or not.
Though the country’s constitution ensures women’s rights, in social reality, the rights can be protected through ensuring women empowerment.
Condemning the complexities and leniency the cases of violence against women and children face, he stressed the need of a monitoring committee combining the ministries for quicker implementation of laws.
Public awareness must be created, he added.
Among others, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam, SCBA Secretary A M Mahbub Uddin Khokon and Bangladesh Legal Aid Services Organization Director Md. Zafrul Hasan were also present in the programme chaired by BMP President Ayesha Khanam.
