Barisal regional unit of Bangladesh Girl Guides Association on Wednesday observed ‘World Thinking Day’ with the theme ‘Lets Grow’ and calling for indiscriminate rights and empowerment of girls and women to reduce poverty, early marriage, violence against women.
The participants also called to ensure women’s equal participation in decision-making for a fair share in the policy making positions in all fields to end all sorts of gender discrimination.
The programme was presided over by Begum Faizun Nahar, regional commissioner, was held at the Barisal Regional Guide House participated by Ahsan Habib Kamal, Barisal City Corporation Mayor, as chief guest, Anwar Hossain, district education officer and members of girl guides from different wings of BGGA.
World Thinking Day observed world-wide on February 22, also to mark the birth day of Lord Baden Powel and Lady Baden Powel, founder of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts movement.
Recitations from religious books, discussion on message of the day, handicrafts fair, cutting birthday cake of the founders of the movement, collecting donations and taking oath for continuing movement till achieving the goal, included in the programme.
The speakers said educating girls is one of the most powerful and effective ways to reduce global poverty, early marriage and violence.
A child born to a literate mother could survive most and less likely to be married as children, they observed.
They told early marriage of girls identified for causes of poverty, ill-health, unskilledness, lack of confidence and discriminations in the socio-political-family affairs and policy making positions in Bangladesh.
The participants of the programme also renewed their oaths to spread Girl Guides movement in the region for nourishing patriotism, morality, life skill to create good citizenship and better social and
family life.
