Bangladesh Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif, MP, urged the owners of tea estates to consider the issue of increasing the wages of their workers with compassion and sympathy.
“The tea workers are very poor and helpless. They are demanding to increase their wages. I would like to request the owners of the tea estates to consider the matter with compassion and humanity. Please sit with them and accommodate their demands as much as you can,” he said.
Hanif said this on Thursday while addressing as chief guest a discussion marking National Mourning Day and 47th Martyrdom Anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman organized by Dakkhin Surma upazila Awami League in Sylhet, a press release said in Dhaka, reports BSS.
The Awami League leader said that he was very disappointed by the fact that the tea workers have not yet joined their work, adding, “I think they would have certainly joined their work spontaneously if the matter of increasing their wages had been considered humanly.”
Hanif also called upon the leaders and activists of Awami League to remain united, saying, “We need a well organized force of activists to achieve and absolute victory in the next general election”.
“The 12th national polls will be held in December, 2023, or in the first part of 2024. As per the constitution, that election will be held under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and we do not have any scope of violating the constitution,” he further said.
Awami League Liberation War Affairs Secretary Mrinal Kanti Das addressed the discussion as chief discussant, while acting president of Sylhet district Awami League Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury, General Secretary Nasir Uddin Khan, Sylhet-3 lawmaker Habibur Rahman Habib also spoke on the occasion, among others.
