World Population Day observed: Call for collective efforts to ensure planned family

Kishoreganj District Administration, Family Planning Department and NGOs jointly arranged a discussion, rally, posturing, cultural function marking the World Population Day on Tuesday.
A discussion on Family Planning: Empowering People, Developing Nations was held at local Co-operative Community Center in the town Tuesday morning.
ADC (General & DS) Torafder Akhter Jamil attended as chief guest while Deputy Director of Family Planning AKM Enamul Haque chaired the meeting.
It was addressed among others by Civil Surgeon Dr. Habibur Rahman as special guest, Deputy Civil Surgeon Dr. Mujibur Rahman, Officer In-charge Khandaker Shawkot Jahan and Sadar Upazila Vice-chairman Kamrun-Naher Lona.
ADC (General & D.S) Torafder Akhter Jamil said that family services should be available to the all able couple across the country to help them build a planned family. Terming planning and planned family is a prerequisite for a country’s development.
Civil Surgeon Dr. Habib said that small family plays a vital role in building a happy and prosperous country.
Later a colourfull rally was brought out in the town marking the day.
BSS from Rajshahi reports: Speakers at a discussion here on Tuesday said collective efforts have become an urgent need to ensure planned family everywhere in the society for the sake of empowering people as well as developing the nation.
They viewed that there is no way, but to create public awareness about planned family and that is very important for freeing the nation from the curse of poverty and hunger besides attaining economic emancipation.
Divisional and district offices of the Department of Family Planning organised the discussion in the conference hall of Family Welfare Visitors Training Institute (FWVTI) in observance of the World Population Day-2017. “Family Planning Empowering People, Developing Nation” was the main theme of the day.
Commissioner of Rajshahi division Noor-Ur-Rahman and Divisional Director of Health Dr Abdus Sobhan addressed the meeting as the chief and special guests respectively with Divisional Director of Department of Family Planning Moloy Kumar Roy in the chair.
Deputy Commissioner Helal Mahmud Sharif and Civil Surgeon Dr Samajit Kumar Shaha also spoke at the programme.
During her welcome speech, deputy director-in-charge of the department Dr Nasim Akter gave an overview of the district level family planning activities and, so far, achievements.
Stressing the need for giving highest priority to the family planning activities, the speakers said the national development activities are being hampered due to the burden of over population.
Highlighting the necessity of expediting the village-level family planning activities, the speakers underlined the need for giving top priority to motivating the fertile couples so that they could control their unwanted pregnancy through using contraceptives.
“If we can control the unexpected pregnancies in the greater perspective, country’s population could be reduced to a tolerable rate easily,” said Noor- Ur-Rahman, adding the field level workers should be more careful and attentive to performing their respective duties.
Marking the day, 14 government and non-government institutions and individuals were awarded for their laudable contribution to the field.
Earlier, a procession was brought out from the Greater Road intersection that paraded some of the thoroughfares of the district town.
BSS from Rangpur adds: Experts at a discussion here on Tuesday called for popularising family planning to contain population growth as a prerequisite for attaining the sustainable development goals (SDGs).
They came up with the call in the post-rally discussion organised to observe the World Population Day- 2017 with the theme of ‘Family Planning: Empowering People, Developing Nations’ by the Family Planning Department (FPD).
The FPD in association with the district administration, USAID-Advancing Adolescent Health, LAMB Hospital, LAMB A2H Project and other voluntary organisations chalked out elaborate programmes in observance of the day.
The programmes included rally, discussion and distribution of prizes among best family planning assistants, female family planning visitors and different organisations for their extraordinary contributions to the population control programme.
Officials, executives, employees, professionals, educationists, students and civil society members participated in the rally with banners, festoons and placards bearing different slogans in the city streets.
Divisional Commissioner Kazi Hasan Ahmed attended the discussion held at conference room of the Civil Surgeon as the chief guest with Divisional Deputy Director of the FPD Dr Sheikh Saiful Islam in the chair.
Divisional Deputy Director (Health) Dr Mozammel Hossain, Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Wahiduzzaman, Zila Parishad Chairman Advocate Chhafia Khanom, Civil Surgeon Dr Abu Md Zakirul Islam addressed as special guests.
In his welcome speech, Dr Sheikh Saiful Islam narrated importance of the day and massive programmes being implementing by the government to provide advanced education to the common people to make them efficient citizens. He put special importance on imparting healthcare education to the teenage girls, children and women through community clinics, union health and family welfare centers, mother and children welfare centers and other service centres. Dr Abu Md Zakirul Islam stressed on ensuring health education for adolescents, preventing adolescent pregnancy and child marriage to reduce maternal and neonatal deaths in attaining SDGs and ensuring welfare of the future generations. The chief guest called for popularising the message of ‘not more than two children, but one is better’ and encouraging all able couples in adopting short, long-term and permanent methods of family planning to contain population growth.
