Cabinet clears CDA, KDA bills

No decision yet on extension of religious festivals' vacation

No decision was taken by the Cabinet on Monday about the extension of vacation in Eid-ul-Fitr, Eid-ul-Azha and religious festivals of other communities.
Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam informed this to journalists after the regular Cabinet meeting held at the Prime Minister’s Office with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
Eid-ul-Azha will be celebrated across the country on September 2.
The Cabinet approved the drafts of Chittagong Development Authority Bill, 2017 and Khulna Development Authority Bill, 2017.
Alam said some changes have been brought to the structure of the existing boards of the two development authorities to make the existing laws more time-befitting and ensure planned development of Chittagong and Khulna cities.
There will be some common features in the two boards like having a chairman each and four full-time members in each of the two boards in addition to incorporating the post of a member-secretary in both the boards, the Cabinet Secretary said.
Besides, the Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong will be a member of the CDA Board while the Deputy Commissioners of Khulna, Jessore and Bagerhat will be the KDA Board members, he also said.
In case of the CDA board, Shafiul Alam said, Executive Engineer of the Public Works Department, Chief Engineer of the CDA, Managing Director of Chittagong Wasa, representatives from the Bangladesh Railways Eastern Zone, Chittagong Sea Port Authority, two councilors of Chittagong City Corporation nominated by the City Mayor will be its members.
Besides, there will be one representative each from the Ministries of Environment, and Civil Aviation and Tourism and the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the CDA Board while four eminent citizens will be appointed by the government as its members, he said.
About the Khulna Development Authority, the Cabinet Secretary said representatives from the Mongla Port, Noapara Municipality, Ministry of Land and the Department of Architecture and three eminent citizens to be appointed by the government will remain in the KDA Board in addition to other members.
In response to a question, the Cabinet Secretary said the government may need to import around 20 lakh tonnes of food grains, including 15 lakh tonnes of rice by January next.
At the outset of the meeting, the Cabinet adopted separate condolence motions at the death of legendary Bangla film actor Razzak, former AL MP and freedom fighter Khan Tipu Sultan and former footballer Shamsul Islam.
Razzak passed away at a hospital in Dhaka on August 21 and Khan Tipu Sultan on August 19.
Shamsul Islam Mollah, the father of former Bangladesh national cricket team captain Khaled Masud Pilot and a former footballer, drowned in a pond in Sagorpara area of Rajshahi on Sunday.
