Local businessmen and traders sources said they have never seen such a sudden flood water in the area and it would cost thousands of businessmen with several crores of taka. Local sources said incessant rain accompanied with flash flood flodded about thousands small , medium and large shops, organizations, banks, and other trading offices at Khatungonj, chaktai and its adjoiing areas .
The areas were flooded with short time, as the traders and the shop owners did not get any time to save their commodities from the water, said Khatungonj Trade and Industries Association.
Tidal water often flooded the nearby lowlying areas but the flood experienced did not occur in last 30 years, sources said.
According to Khatungonj Trade and Industries Association General secretary Sagir Ahmed said there are a bout 7000 business houses in these areas which transacts business of rice, wheat, edible oil, sugar, pulse, onion, ginzer, garlic and other essential commodities.
About 10 thousand businessmen and traders are involved with the regular trading of essential commodities with their commodity godowns in ground floors.
The importers of this hub and adjoining areas imports goods from abroad and stored in these areas. Sagir ahmed further said the businessmen of the area rund their business through bank loans.
After such a disaster, the businessmen may not be able to pay their bank loan installments which would also affect the banking sector, sources said.
