A businessman was shot dead by a shotgun in broad daylight in Dhaka’s Dakshinkhan area on Wednesday.
Police have arrested six people, including Aminul Islam Hannan alias Japani Hannan suspecting their involvement with the incident and recovered two firearms.
Meanwhile, the agitated people torched Hannan’s jip in front of his home after the incident. The atmosphere of the area has been tense since the incident. Additional police were later deployed at the spot.
The deceased identified as Abdur Rashid, 35, who was the son of Abdul Malek of that area. He was in the sand and rod-cement business.
The incident took place in Dakshinkhan’s Ainusbagh Chandnagar’s area at 11:30am; Dakshinkhan Police Station Inspector (investigation) Azizul Haque confirmed the matter.
According to the local people, the main accused Hannan claimed himself as Awami League leader and secretary general of the Japan-Bangladesh Human Rights Organization.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Deputy Commissioner (Uttara Division) Md Shahidullah told the reporter that they are suspecting that the killing took place over previous enmity. We are investigating the incident.
He said that the main accused Hannan, known as ‘Japani Hannan’ in the locality, had business dispute with Abdur Rashid for a long time. Due to this, Hannan and Rashid have been arguing with each other on Wednesday morning. Hannan then brought a shotgun from the house and shot at Rashid multiple times. The first bullet missed the target while another hit the victim in the head.
Residents in the area later rescued him and took him to the local hospital. There the doctor pronounced him dead, he further said.
The deputy commissioner said that a shotgun and a pistol were recovered from Hannan’s home after the incident. It is being investigated whether these are licensed or not.
Abdur Rashid’s body has been sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College morgue for autopsy, he added.
Meanwhile, the agitated local people vandalized Hannan’s house window and torched, his jip car near the spot.
That time, Hannan claimed his innocence on the Facebook Live and sought the cooperation of police and the fire service to avoid the attack. Opponents attacked his house and car to cause damage, he complained on Facebook Live.
Fire Service and Civil Defence Headquarters duty officer Ershad Hossain said that two firefighting units from Uttara rushed there and doused the blaze.
