A businessman was allegedly assaulted by some unknown miscreants while returning from his office in the port city on Sunday. The victim was identified as Suranjit Kumar Singha, son of Birendra Kumar Singha of village Dupchar, under Laksam police station of Comilla district. At present he resides with his family at city’s Katalgonj residential area under Panchlaish police station. It is learnt that Suranjit was going to city’s Lalkhan Bazar from Agrabad Commercial Area by rickshaw on that day. Some unidentified persons assaulted and wounded him after he had crossed Tiger Pass intersection at around 7.15 pm. Then he was rushed to a private clinic by the passers-by.
It is alleged that some miscreants repeatedly demanded extortion from him over phone for the last few months. They even threatened of doing physical harm to him and his family members if he failed to fulfill their demands. They also threatened to cause damage to his business establishments. His village home was also ransacked which left her elderly mother Maya Rani Singha severely injured in a violence on 5 January 2014 midnight that followed the 10th General Election held on the same day. Maya Rani succumbed to her injuries in the hospital on 9 January the same year.
In such a panic-stricken situation Suranjit, his wife and the sons feel helpless amid insecurity. They sought adequate security measures from the authorities concerned. Mentionable, Suranjit Kumar Singha is involved with different social, humanitarian and religious organisations.
