UNB, Dhaka :
Chairman of Bangladesh International Arbitration Centre (BIAC) Mahbubur Rahman on Wednesday said Bangladesh requires an enabling framework for entrepreneurship to help flourish in trade and investment.
Rahman, also President of International Chamber of Commerce, Bangladesh (ICC-B), said one key requirement is quick and cost-effective methods to resolve commercial and investment disputes. “However, in regards to Bangladesh, we have a long way to go.”
The BIAC Chairman was addressing a workshop on ‘Commercial Mediation’ jointly organised by BIAC and Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) at the DCCI auditorium.
The workshop was arranged to create awareness about resolution of commercial disputes outside the court system through mediation.
Latifur Rahman Chairman and CEO, Transcom Ltd, Syed Nasim Manzur President MCCI, former Advisor to the caretaker government Abdul Muyeed Chowdhury, former Attorney General Barrister Fida M Kamal, Helal Ahmed Chowdhury former Managing Director & CEO Pubali Bank Ltd, senior banker Shireen Scheik Mainuddin, former Judge Mohammad Tarik Haider, Mohammad Shahjahan Khan, immediate past President DCCI, Hossain Khaled, President DCCI, also spoke at the workshop.
Representatives from different banks, legal chambers and business houses took part in the workshop.
In line with the established practice in the developed and major developing countries, Bangladesh government has already brought about a number of amendments to a few important laws, incorporating the provisions of mandatory mediation in civil and money loan cases.
The speakers said these provisions cannot be implemented in the absence of people’s awareness about the benefits of alternative dispute resolution methods, particularly mediation.
BIAC is committed to providing to businesses required infrastructure and facilities to take advantage of the above mentioned amendments, they said.
