The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the High Court orders that granted anticipatory bail to 65 BNP leaders and activists including Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and Ishraque Hossain in seven cases filed with different police stations in Dhaka over the incidents of torching 11 buses at different places in the capital city on November 12 this year.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division
headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order by dismissing seven petitions filed by the government seeking stay on the High Court orders of anticipatory bail.
Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal appeared for the BNP leaders and activists, while Deputy Attorney General Bishwajit Debnath represented the State during the hearing.
Police filed the cases with different police stations in Dhaka against about 500 hundred people including the 65 BNP leaders and activists on November 12 and 13 after 11 buses were torched in the capital city on November 12.
Following separate bail petitions, the HC on November 18 granted anticipatory bail to 120 BNP leaders and activists including its Standing Committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and member of the central committee Ishraque till January 5, 2021 in 15 cases.
The High Court Bench of Justice Md Habibul Gani and Justice Md Riaz Uddin Khan passed the orders after hearing petitions filed in this regard.
After the High Court order Barrister Kazal said, the bail receivers will have to surrender in the metropolitan sessions judges’ court within this time.
