Shah Alam Nur :
Commuters are forced to stand on roads to wait for transports as most of the passenger sheds in the capital are either broken or occupied.
Hawkers, cloth shops, butcher shops and fast food shops have grabbed the passenger sheds, sending the passengers to stand on the roads amid scorching heat and heavy shower.
In many parts of the city, steps have been taken by the two governing authorities of the capital to remove these illegal establishments.
Visiting the city’s Mirpur, Mohammadpur, Farmgate, Shahbagh, New Market, Gulshan, Motijheel, Paltan, Malibagh, Mouchak, Moghbazar, Mohakhali, Sayedabad, Jatrabari and Sadarghat areas, it has been found that most of the passenger sheds are under illegal occupation.
Sources at DNCC and DSCC said that most of these sheds were leased out to influential people and companies in 1989-90 for 25 years.
Some of these lease contracts had already expired, and that of the others will expire later this year, they said.
Asadur Rahman, resident of Tejturi Bazar area, said the passenger sheds are now used as BRTC ticket counters, newspaper stands and fast food shops.
