Bus owners call for indefinite strike in Sylhet from today

Sylhet Correspondent :Bus Owners and Workers Associations have called an indefinite strike in Sylhet division from Sunday protesting against vandalism by auto-rickshaw drivers.Selim Ahmed, District President of Sylhet Bus Owners and Workers Association announced the strike on Saturday afternoon.It is learnt that Sylhet District CNG-run Auto-rickshaw Workers Union enforced a strike in the city on Saturday to press home its seven-point demands.During the strike, the auto-rickshaw workers vandalised dozens of buses on different roads along with Kadamtoli Bus Terminal in the city at about 1pm on Saturday.When the bus workers tried to resist them, a clash broke out between two sides. Later, the bus workers set ablaze several auto-rickshaws in different parts of the city. Both sides set at least 50 buses and autorickshaws on fire during the clash in the city.Police lobbed teargas shells to disperse the unruly bus and auto-rickshaw workers. Besides, police fired blank shots to stop the clash between both sides at South Surma upazila.Additional Commissioner of Sylhet Metropolitan Police Rahmatullah told the reporters that the situation was under control in the afternoon. Police forces have been deployed at different parts of the city to maintain law and order.
