Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Sunday strongly protested against the government decision to hike bus fare by 80 per cent.
Addressing a virtual press conference from the party central office at the city’s Naya Paltan, BNP
senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi denounced the government’s decision to hike the bus fare.
He said that the government’s decision to hike bus fare proved that they are hostile to the people as the low income group have lost their jobs due to COVID-19 pandemic and are struggling to survive.
“Decision to hike bus fare before reopening buses proved that the government wants to suck blood of people making them hostage,” he said.
Referring to ruling Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader’s comment that the general holiday was withdrawn by taking opinion of experts, Rizvi said that the whole nation is shocked and astonished after hearing the AL leader’s comment.
He questioned about the experts’ field of expertise and said that the experts suggested to spread ‘death seeds’.
The BNP leader said that such experts could not be found in neighbouring India and they extended the lockdown until June 30.
Rizvi said that all the offices and public transports were reopened ignoring direction of the World Health Organisation and International Labour Organisation and opinions of government’s technical committee on COVID-19 and threw the country into a dangerous situation.
Referring to statistics that 26 per cent of the total death and 28 per cent of the total infection was recorded in past one week, he questioned whether the government wanted to make the whole country a killing ground by reopening all.
