MEDIA report said tax lawyers have taken allegations before the notice of the Chairman of National Board of Revenue (NBR) that tax officials are harassing tax-payers misusing different provisions of tax laws. They are misusing audit and assessment of income tax and in doing so a section of taxmen always lure people to engage in bargain to reduce their payable tax and close audit files without elaborate questioning. A common allegation is that some lower grade NBR officials wearing the vest of taxmen and identifying themselves as inspectors regularly visits shops and small businesses and often intimidate them to engage in tax bargain. They want to check weighing scale and cash book and create as many trouble. Once they get know of ones weaknesses, they continue to extort money using their position.
Avoiding tax is not good but the tax system has to be reasonable keeping in mind the people’s ability to pay tax. It has to be remembered that the people pay tax not in one form and on top of it is corruption at every stage.
The law of income-tax must be made easy.
