BSS, Rangamati :
Cultivation of orange has become successful bringing fortune to many farmers and ushering in new prospect in the economy of the Baghaichhari upazila in the district.
Bumper yield of orange harvest has brought smiles on the faces of farmers in the upazilas of the district during the current season.
Attaining output beyond expectation, marginal people living in remote Baghaichhari upazila turned to orange cultivation giving up the age-old shifting cultivation (jum chash), said upazila chairman of Baghaichhari, Boro Hrishi Chakma.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) officer Sahinul Islam said a total of 1,258 hectares of land have been brought under the cultivation in the area during the current season and the soil of Sazek hills is very much conducive to orange production. Light yellowish oranges were seen hanging with plants in between leaves at hills of Soinalchhora, Sialdahlui, and Batling Mauza in Sazek presenting a festive look around, said Deputy Director of DAE Altabur Rahman.
Local farmers have to face various difficulties while transporting their crops as well as fruits which somehow discourage them from getting on orange plantation, said Anil Chakma and Buddhamoni Chakma of Soinalchhora, who have used their hill slopes for orange plantation.
