Narsingdi Correspondent :
A record wheat production is likely in the northern region during this Rabi season as the tender plants are growing excellent now after the enthusiastic farmers already exceeded its fixed farming target, official sources said.
Farmers and Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) officials have attributed the achievement to congenial weather condition, timely supply of agri-inputs and efforts by the department.
According to DAE of Narsingdi sources, a total of 545 hectares of land were brought under wheat cultivation this year in Narsingdi district with a production target of 1635 metric tonnes and the farmers are happy with the yield they have attained.
Of the total some 60 hectares in Narsingdi Sadar upazila, 80 hectares in Balabo upazila, 75 hectares in Monohardi upazila, 95 hectares in Shabipur upazila, 105 hectares in Polash and 130 hectares in Raipura upazila.
At present wheat is being sold between Tk 830 to Tk 860 per maund at different locals markets of the region while the government has fixed its procurement price at Tk 26 per kg. Disgruntled over the price fall of Aman and Irri-boro paddy during last few years many farmers of the region opted for wheat cultivation this season.
Abdur Salam, at Adiabad village under Raipura upazila told The New Nation he cultivated wheat on one acre of land instead of Boro paddy this season and harvested 40 maunds of wheat and sold it at Tk 860 per maund.
Abul Kalam Azad, another wheat grower at Bhoratar kandi area under Shabipur upazila, cultivation of wheat needs only three times irrigation and it is less costly than paddy cultivation.
BSS from Faridpur reports: Bumper wheat production is expected in the district during the current season.
According to Agriculture Extension Office (AEO) sources in the current season wheat was cultivated on 31,510 hectares of land exceeding the official target of cultivating on 26,630 hectares.
Usually the production target has also increased from 74,546 tonnes to one lakh tonnes reflecting a sigh of relief for the farmers who incurred losses in the past Aman -Boro season due to low price. However that loss of Boro paddy prompted them to bring more land under wheat cultivation and they are now busy in caring and nurturing the green standing crop in the field.
According to official sources, in Sadar upazilla wheat has been cultivated on 5,100 hectares of land with the target of producing 14,280 tonne, in Charbhadrasan upazilla it has been cultivated on 1,000 hectares with the target of harvesting 2,800 tonnes of wheat.
In Nagarkanda upazilla, 3,400 hectares of land has been brought under wheat cultivation with the target of producing 9,520 tonnes of wheat, in Saltha upazilla 5,600 metric tonnes of wheat is expected to be produced cultivating 2,000 hectares of land.
BSS from Joypurhat adds: Bumper wheat production has brought smile on the face of farmers of all the five upazilas in the district as they got fair price for the crop during the current season.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) had a target of cultivating wheat on 1,754 hectares of land here, but exceeding the target wheat was cultivated on 1,995 hectares and 5,537 tonnes of wheat were produced.
Deputy Director of DAE AZM Sabbir Ebne Zahan told BSS that the farmers of the area were found interested in wheat farming on more new lands due to availability of seeds, fertilisers, insecticides and other agri-inputs in a favourable climatic condition.
