The farmers of in all the six upazilas of Narsingdi district are expecting bumper wheat production this season (2012-2013) due to favorable weather conditions and timely supply of necessary agriculture inputs.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Deputy Director Shovach Chindro Gayen told The New Nation “The farmers of Narsingdi Sadar, Shibpur, Raipura, Balabo, Monohardi and Polash upazila have cultivated the crop on around 5500 hectares of land. A target has been set to produce 105200 tonnes of wheat this season.”
The farmers have already completed sowing of wheat seeds after harvesting early variety Aman paddies. The farmers are seen interested as they see high profit against low cost production cost.
Farmer Abdul Latif of Karimpur village of Sadar upazila said, that “This year I have cultivated wheat on Two acre of land which costs only Tk 20 thousand per acre. I am expecting minimum Tk 1,00,000 as profit from the land.” Another Farmer Abul Kalam Azad of Char Aralia village of Raipura upazila said that I have cultivated wheat on One acre of Land which costs only Tk 10 thousand per acre. I am expecting minimum Tk 50000 as profit from the land.
To make the programme successful, DAE, BADC, BARI and other NGOs distributed quality wheat seeds among the cultivators and different Banks including Bangladesh Krisi Bank (BKB) provided agriculture loans among farmers in the region.
The DAE arranged training programme and carried out campaign for using organic fertilizer before cultivation.
The farmers are now growing the crops commercially to reap more profit.
