Cultivators in Rangamati are happy with a bumper production of watermelon here this season.
Over 1,500 tons of watermelon are apparently produced on 700 hectares of land at different places under 10 upazilas of the district this season exceeding the volume of last year’s production.
Seven thousand tons of this popular summer sweet juicy fruit have been produced on 700 hectares of land under 10 upazilas in Rangamati district this season exceeding last year’s production, the Deputy Director of Rangamati Regional Office of Directorate of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Tarun Kanti Bhattacharyya told BSS.
Farmers at Langadu upazila are pioneer in watermelon production in the district. They brought 600 hectares of land under this sweet fruit cultivation. They mostly utilised the bank of the Kaptai Lake this year.
Farmers at Zurachhari, Borkal, Naniarchar and sadar upazila also obtained a good harvest due to suitable weather, said Bhattacharya.
But due to high cost involved in transferring from hills to plain land, the farmers do not get reasonable price of their produce,said upazila chairman of Langadu, Tofazzal Hossain.
The farmers while talking to BSS stressed logistic support from the authorities concerned to boost watermelon cultivation in the hilly district.
