BSS, Gaibandha :
A bumper production of sugarcane is expected at the eight sub-zones of Rangpur Sugar Mills Limited (RSML) as the sugarcane saplings have grown well in the fields.
Around 5,000 farmers of the sub-zones have cultivated sugarcane on 5,370 acres of land in 2014-2015 plantation season, officials said.
Zinnat Ali Prodhan, president of Sugarcane Growers’ Association of the mill, said favourable climatic condition, timely supply of high quality seed, fertilisers, insecticides and other agri-inputs and proper disbursement of subsidy and agri-loan to the growers were the main reasons behind the expectation of a bumper production.
Though the RSML went to sugar production every year, it was not operated as per expected time due to lack of supply of required quantity of sugarcane from the mill zone areas, causing losses for years.
To run the mill properly and to turn it into a profitable firm in near future, the authorities concerned took many initiatives including high quality seed distribution, subsidy, and loan disbursement on easy terms for the growers.
Besides, officials and staff of the mill conducted different motivational and monitoring programmes for the farmers of the mill zones during the plantation season to bring more land under sugarcane farming to attain the goal.
According to sources, over Taka 4.33 crore were disbursed to the growers of the mill zone areas as loan so that they could farm the sugarcane on their land without economical troubles, said Abu Taher Bhuyan, general manager (Agriculture) of the mill.
Talking to BSS, managing director (MD) of RSML Abdul Khaleque said as many as 1.10 lakh tonnes of yields might be produced in the current season.
In reply to a query, the MD said the mill authority has set up a target to
produce 3,900 tonnes of sugar crushing 60,000 tonnes of sugarcane during the 2014-2015 season.
