Bumper production of mustard likely in Jamalpur

The poor and marginal farmers as well as officials concerned of DAE are expecting a satisfactory price and production of mustard in seven upazilas of the district during the current season.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) official said favourable weather, timely sowing of seed and using of balanced fertilizer behind the bumper production of the crop. DAE office sources said a total of 20,130 hectares of land have been brought under mustard cultivation in the district with a production target of 23,754 tonnes of mustard.
Deputy Director of BADC (seed marketing) M Reazul Islam said BADC distributed seven varieties of mustard seeds among the farmers in the district through its dealers.
Most of the farmers cultivated BARI-14 and Tory-7 varieties mustard due to short duration varieties. Farmer can harvest the two varieties of mustard in 75 days to 80 days from sowing it, he added DAE office sources said mustard grows well in the temperature between 13 degree to 20 degree Celsius and low fogging.
The weather was favorable for mustard cultivation this year. Harvesting of mustard will begin within a week.
