The farming of potato has exceeded its target in Rangpur agriculture region during this current season.
Harvesting of the crop is going on and cultivators of the region are overjoyed as they are getting good output of their produce during this current season. Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Rangpur official sources said that potato was cultivated on around 92,675 hectares of land in five districts under the agriculture region this season against the target of 86,642 hectares of land which is some 6033 hectares higher than the target. The districts are: Rangpur, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Lalmonirhat and Nilphamari.
A good number of peasants said, with the hope to earn handsome profit they cultivated potato this year because in recent times have they failed to make satisfactory profit from the farming of paddy and some other crops. Shahjahan Mia, a grower of Ranipukur area under Mithapukur upazila in Rangpur told TNN that he cultivated early potato on 50 decimals of land this year and got good yield as well as handsome profit.
Presently, different kitchen markets of the region are overflowing with huge quantities of vegetables including potato, market sources said.DAE Rangpur official sources said at the initial stage of farming potato fields in some areas across the region were affected by late blight disease but with the help of DAE growers could be able to combat the adverse situation. Growers are given necessary advices and assistances by the DAE officials so that they can enhance potato cultivation across the region. There are 67 cold storage in the region for potato preservation, sources added.

A bumper yield of potato in the agri-zone of Bogura region this season will boost expand farming of the crop next yea. Growers in the upazila are showing their interest in growing poatao for better returns for consecutive years.
According to a report, potato is being cultivated on 2300 hectares of land in the upazila against the last year’s 1695 hectares.
The DAE has set a good number of demonstration plots for wooing the common farmers in the high yielding varieties of the crop.
Although the common farmers were less interested in potato mainly for poor marketing facilities in the area years ago, but is over by now as a marketing chain has been established.
However, in alongside the different ongoing projects of the DAE, the special programme named ‘Raising crop intensity has been contributing well in motivating and engaging farmers with modern methods of agriculture and high-value crops in the region.
