Farmers and agronomists are expecting a bumper production of Potato in ten south-western districts under Khulna division in this current season.
The ten districts are-Jessore, Narail, Jhenidha, Magura, Kushtia, Chuadanga, Meherpur, Satkhira, Khulna and Bagerhat.
In the past few years, potato growers got higher prices selling their production in various cities including Dhaka after meeting their local demand.
A section of potato growers told this correspondent that they are interested in potato farming this year to get better prices like as previous years.
ATM Momtazul Karim, additional director, Department of Agricultural Extention (DAE) Jessore region, told BSS that favourable climate conditions, adequate supply of necessary fertilisers and pesticides are the reasons behind the bumper production of potato.
Bangladesh Krishi Bank, other government and non-government banks had disbursed adequate crop loans to make the potato cultivation a complete success in the region.
DAE Jessore regional office sources said the farmers and the officials have targeted 2,60,286 tonnes of quality potato from 13,240 hectares of land in south-western region this season.
District wise cultivation and production target follows as: 2,725 hectares brought under potato cultivation with production target of 53,571 tonnes in Jessore, 19 hectares with production target of 374 tonnes in Narail, 57 hectares with production target of 1,121 tonnes in Magura, 1,287 hectares with production target of 25,301 tonnes in Jhenidha,
Besides,2,508 hectares with production target of 49,698 tonnes in Kushtia, 1,099 hectares with production target of 21,605 tonnes in Meherpur, 1,462 hectares with production target of 28,742 tonnes in Chuadanga, 360 hectares with production target of 7,077 tonnes in Khulna, 3,220 hectares with production target of 63,302 tonnes in Satkhira and 483 hectares of land brought under potato cultivation with production target of 9,495 tonnes in Bagerhat.
