The potato growers of twelve upazilas in Narsingdi district are expecting bumper production due to favourable weather conditions and necessary steps taken by Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) this season.
A total of 1800 hectares of land have been brought under potato cultivation in the district this season. A target has also been set to produce 37818 tonnes of the vegetable.
DAE Deputy Director Maksud Ali told The New Nation, “Of the total land, 1800 hectares have been brought under potato and the rest under sweet potato cultivation.”
According to sources, 270 hectares of land have been brought under the cultivation in Narsingdi Sadar upazila, 285 hectares in Polash upazila, 300 hectares in Monohardi upazila, 180 hectares in Balabo upazila, 230 hectares in Shabpur upazila and 535 hectares in Raipura upazila of the district.
Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) has taken measures to provide the farmers with high yielding varieties of seeds, fertilizers, insecticides and other inputs for making the programme a success.
On the other hand, government and private commercial banks, including Bangladesh Krishi Bank’s Narsingdi zonal office, have been providing loans among the poor, small and marginal farmers in the district.
Farmer Kalam of Baluakandi village under Raipura upazila said, “I have cultivated the vegetable on five acres of my land to reap profit satisfactorily.”
