A bumper production of mustard is likely in Rangpur Agriculture region during the current Rabi season as the crop is growing excellent after the farmers exceeded its fixed farming target, official sources said.
Like in the previous years, the farmers are expecting bumper mustard output again this time as most of the crop fields are becoming ready for harvest soon though the lately sowed fields are in full bloom now.
Earlier, the farmers successfully completed sowing of mustard seed after harvesting early variety Aman rice, vegetables and the crop is growing excellent under favourable climatic conditions everywhere, including the vast char areas on the river basins.
Horticulture Specialist of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Khandker Md. Mesbahul Islam informed the national news agency that the farmers are expected to start harvesting of mustard from the middle of January.
According to the DAE sources, the farmers have cultivated mustard in 30,959 hectares land against the fixed target of bringing 26,632 hectares under its cultivation to produce 30,651 tonne of the oilseed this season in the region.
However, the farmers have finally exceeded the fixed farming target by 16.24 percent or 4,327 hectares land for the five districts of Rangpur, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Nilphamari and Lalmonirhat districts under Rangpur Agriculture Region for this season.
The DAE, Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation, Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI) and NGOs have distributed quality mustard seed and banks agri-loans among farmers to make mustard farming programme successful this season.
The mustard fields have worn eye-catching yellow looks predicting bumper output in the vast char areas and mainland of Rangpur, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Lalmonirhat and Nilphamari districts in the region on the river basins.
Agriculture and Environment Coordinator of RDRS Bangladesh Mamunur Rashid said the farmers have mostly sowed the popular BARI variety mustard seed evolved by Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI) this season like in the previous years.
Sadar Upazila Agriculture Officer of Rangpur Afzal Hossain said the farmers have been showing more interests in farming mustard in more lands after getting repeated bumper production with excellent price in recent years.
Acting Rangpur Regional Additional Director of the DAE Zulfiquer Haider said necessary training, assistance, inputs, quality seed, technologies and agri-loans have been provided to the farmers for making mustard farming programme successful this season.
