Bumper mustard harvest has been expected in Khulna district this year, according to agriculture office sources.
Farmers of 9 upazilas in the district are cultivating the winter crop, expected good yield and fair prices. The 9 upazilas are Digholia, Terokhada, Rupsha, Batiaghata, Paikgachha, Koyra, Dakop, Phultala and Dumuria.
Agriculture Extension official sources said, easy cultivation process and lower cost of production encourage the farmers to cultivate mustard. The farmers of Khulna district have cultivated 8250 hectors of land, DAE sources said.
Most of lands are covered with varieties by Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute(BARI) including BARI Sharisha-9, Tori-7 and Sampad, said Deputy Director(DD) of the directorate of agriculture extension office Md. Anisuzzaman. Depending upon soil condition, requires only one or two times irrigation while around Tk. 3500 is needed to cultivate the crop on a bigha of land.
In the last year on an average 10 maunds of mustard in producing on a bigha of land, Shamsul Haque of Shugondhi village of Digholia upazila said. Shajahan Mia of Alaipur village of Rupsha upazila said he is hopeful to get bumper production of mustard and harvest will begin within the 4th week of this month.
Abdul Goni, a farmer of village Khornia of Dumuria upazila said, “I cultivated mustard on a bigha of land last year spending Tk. 2500 only and got six maunds. I sold each maund of mustard for Tk. 1500 in the local market. This year I cultivated 2 bighas of land.”
Mrinal Das, a farmer of Anandonagar village of Terokhada upazila said that he has cultivated mustard BARI on two bighas of land expecting bumper production as the DAE authorities encouraged to cultivate the crop(mustard).
BSS from Rangpur adds: An excellent production of mustard is likely in Rangpur agriculture region during the current Rabi season as harvest of the crop just began with better yield rates.
According to sources in the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), harvest of the crop continues in full swing in the riverine char areas while the process will get full momentum by this month end in the main land.
According to market sources, the average price of mustard fell down to Taka 2,000 per maund (40 kg) against the price of Taka 2,250 per maund last month in the region with the arrival of the newly harvested mustard in the local markets. Talking to BSS today, Horticulture Specialist of the DAE at its Rangpur regional office Khondker Md Mesbahul Islam said the farmers already started harvesting of mustard and the process will continue till the end of the next month.
“The farmers have cultivated mustard on 38,525 hectares of land against the fixed target of bringing 44,705 hectares of land under its cultivation to produce 54,987 tonnes of the oilseed this season in the region,” he said. However, the fixed production target of the oilseed would fall short as the farmers could bring 6,180 hectares of lands less than the fixed cultivation target this season in all five districts under the region.
“The fixed mustard farming target could not be achieved following crop diversification this season and cultivation of Transplanted Aman crop on more land during the last season,” Mesbahul said.
