BSS, Rajshahi :
The sweet smell of mango flowers is floating in the air as they have bloomed in bunches in most mango orchards of Rajshahi and Chapainawabgonj districts, nationwide famous for the delicious fruit.
Mango growers are expecting bumper yield this year due to the favourable weather prevailing in the area, encouraging them to cultivate mangoes on more land.
Dr Sharof Uddin, Scientific Officer of Regional Horticulture Research Station, said the booming mango flowering at this stage predicts an excellent production of the most popular fruit in the region this season, if the climatic conditions remained favourable.
He observed that the prevailing climatic conditions are suitable for mango flowering and budding and thousands of mango trees have already worn eye-catching looks with huge blooms.
There are about 30 lakh mango trees of different ages and varieties on some 32,816 hectares in the region with creation of many mango orchards and increased mango farming in the homesteads in recent years.
He said about 70 varieties of mangoes are being cultivated in the region, of which the most prominent varieties are Gopalbhog, Fazli, Langra, Khirsapat, Amropali, Aswina, Guti and Mistimodhu.
The farmers are taking extensive preparations, cares and measures to make mango farming successful this year in their orchards, homesteads and everywhere, additional deputy director of Department of Agricultural Extension Monzurul Islam said.
He suggested the farmers to contact with the agriculture officers at the field levels and control the attacks by hoppers and some other pests’ attacks on the mango flowers, if any, for better mango formations and productions.
After witnessing the present condition both the growers and the officials are very optimistic about an expected yield of the seasonal fruit.
Dr Alim Uddin, principal scientific officer of Rajshahi Fruit Research Station, hoped for a bumper mango production following massive blooms if the climatic conditions, fluctuations in temperatures, rainfalls, attack by pests and insects remain normal for the next few months.
If the extent of seasonal nor’westers remains within a tolerable limit, there is a huge possibility of achieving a record bumper production of all varieties mango this season, the experts predicted.
Meanwhile, many big mango traders from the capital and other big cities are giving payment in advance to the farmers so that they can get ripe mangoes immediately after harvesting.
