Lemon growers of Mahespur Union under Kasiani upazila in the district have achieved bumper production this year.
According to Kasiani Agriculture Extension Office sources said, about 30 hectors of land have been brought under lemon farming in Kasiani upazila origin ‘kagogi’ where about 1500 farmers involved this farming and they earning huge money from it produce to sale the markets which current market price is high.
Fazlu Mridha (65) , a farmer of village Shibgati under Mahespur union of Kasiani upazila in the district said, he cultivated lemon origin ‘kagogi’ on two local bighas (104 decimla) of land this year and it produce condition is bumper on the other hand current market price is high now per pone (20 quadrate) of lemon is being selling at the rate of taka 180 to 200 & it high rate is possible due to ongoing month of June (Summer period) and huge demand in the markets, Fazlu said.
Rashamay Mondal, Upazila Agriculture Officers (UAO), Kasiani told The New Nation about 30 hectors of land have been brought under ‘kagogi’ lemon cultivation in Kasiani upazila where 1,500 farmers involved this farming due to soil & weather condition is favourable for lemon farming the above producing areas like Shibgati, Hironyakandi, Zonashur, Char Paddabila, Bagia, Nayapara etc. is famous for cultivation of lemon. Lemon farmers in this region are accepting a bumper high price from lemon produce comparatively last year and the lemon is more farming in Kasiani upazila like 30 hectors where 60 hectors farming in whole district, sources said.
Dipu Talukder (62), a farmer of village Hironyakandi under Maheshpur union in Kasiani upazila said he cultivating lemon on 80 decimal of land origin ‘kagogi’ from last six years back and two labours everyday four hours work continuing in my lemon field and they getting taka 300 as weage from me. But I have sold taka 1,80,000 from my lemon produce recently not only that every week I have been sell lemon above 190 to 200 pones (3,800 to 4,000 quadrate) which current market price is taka about 80,000 and everyday huge whole sale traders coming here for purchasing lemon, Dipu said.
Ohidur Rahman, Sub-Assistant Agriculture Officer (SAAO) Zonasur block under Maheshpur union of Kasiani Upazila told The New Nation about 300 lemon cultivators in only Zonashur area have been cultivating on lemon maximum origin ‘kagogi’ and the soil & weather condition is suitable for farming lemon crop and farmers in this region are becoming more benefited from this lemon cultivation every year, Ohidur Rahman said.
