Bumper production of Jute has brought smile on the face of farmers in Narsindi district in current season. Suvash Chandro Gayan, Deputy Director of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) of the district said that in this year target was fixed to cultivate a total of 3732 hectares of land. But the farmers brought additional 3627 hectares of under cultivation this season as they got good price of their produce last year.
Of the total land, farmers cultivated Tosha and variety of Jute of 1976 hectares of land while local variety on 1631 hectares.
DAE office expected that 36203 bales of Jute will be produced this year against the target of 37203 bales. Farmers are now busy to cut jute and rot it. DAE Deputy director Suvash Chandro Gayan said if farmers rot Jute using ribbon rating method they will get high quality Jute fiber.
A total of 445 machines were distributed among farmers of the district to rot Jute using the newly introduced method.
This year they got high yield due to favourable weather condition, farmers Abul Kalam and Kashem Miah of sadar upazila said per maund of Jute is being sold between |Tk 1500 and Tk 2000 in the local market though farmers are expecting higher price of Jute.
