Bumper Haribhanga mango production likely in Rangpur

A bumper production of the fibreless, fleshy and highly tasty local variety “Haribhanga mango” is likely as its harvest begins from the middle of the next month in the district this season, official sources said.
Horticulture specialist of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Khondker Md Mesbahul Islam predicted bumper production of the mango if the climatic condition continues to remain favourable during the next two months.
He said that frequent rainfalls since April last have been helping a lot in better growth of the tender fruit predicting better production of the local variety aristocrat mango having huge demand both at home and abroad.
According to the DAE sources, commercial cultivation of Haribhanga mango has already become popular among the farmers and expands every year to bring self-reliance to hundreds of rural people in the district in recent years.
More than 6,200 farmers and commoners have cultivated the mangoes in 4,200 small, medium, big orchards and also on the homesteads on over 5,700 hectares this season after producing 21,000 tonnes of the fruit worth Taka 147 crore last year in the district.
The farmers are expected to produce around 22,000 tonnes of the mango worth about this season in the district alone this season as its cultivation has been expanding fast here as well as all over Rangpur division in recent years.
The mango is mostly being cultivated in the orchards in Podaganj, Khoragach Purbopara, Khoragach Paschimpara, Ruposhi, Zarullapur, Rangatipara, Bangaon, Chaker Pather, Paikarerhat, Rukniganj, Siraj, Tekani, Moyenpur, Kadamtola, Lalpukur, Shukurerhat, Sikarpur, Fulchowki, Tilakpara, Kashimpur, Ucha Balua, Matherhat and other villages in Mithapukur upazila.
