Cotton cultivators are very happy getting a bumper production and excellent market price after completing harvest of the economical crop first week this month in Jashore region.
Cultivators cultivated cotton on 16, 631 hectares of land in four zones under Jashore region this season, Deputy Director of the CDB’s Jashore region Kamrul Hasan told BSS.
Of them cultivators cultivated cotton on 4,439 hectares of land in Kushtia zone, 4,432 hectares in Chuadanga zone, 4,408 hectares in Jhenidah zone and 3,352 hectares of land in Jashore zone this time in the region.
After completing harvest of the crop, cultivators have produced 45,735 tonnes of cotton in the region.
Cultivators achieved an excellent average yield rate 14 mounds of the crop per bigha of land following expanded cultivation of its hybrid and high yielding varieties The Cotton Development Board (CDB) extended assistance to cultivators to make the intensive cotton cultivation programme a success, he said.
Cotton Development Board (CDB) sources said, cultivators mostly cultivated hybrid varieties of cotton like white gold-1,Rupali-1,CB hybrid-1,DM-4 and high yielding varieties of cotton like CB-14, CB-15 this time.
Market sources said the newly harvested cotton is currently being sold at rates between Taka 3,400 to 3600 per mound (every 40 kg).
Talking to BSS, DD Kamrul Hasan appreciated various pragmatic steps taken by the government to expand cotton farming and increase its output for attaining self-reliance on cotton.
Farmer Md Jamirul Islam in Komorpur village of Chawgacha upazila in Jashore district said he was very happy getting bumper production with lucrative price.
