Harvest of the much-awaited Transplanted Aman (T-Aman) paddy was begin in Sylhet division, some agri officials and farmers said.
Only a few farmers in the region however have harvested paddy of early varieties.
A good number of flood-affected farmers had to transplant the saplings for the second time. Now they are hopeful of getting a good production, said Deputy Director of DAE, Sylhet divisional office, Dr Mamun Ur Rashid.
He said, “We expect a good yield as a total of 387,150 hectares of land have been brought under the paddy farming. It includes 140,245 hectares in Sylhet, 96,435 in Moulvibazar, 75,500 in Habiganj and 74,970 hectares in Sunamganj.”
The DAE earlier set a target to cultivate T-Aman on 371,564 hectares of land with a view of producing 952,812 tonnes of paddy, the official further said.
However, numbers of farmer in different areas alleged that they couldn’t prepare their lands properly due to the longer duration of floods.
The prolonged flood had damaged paddy on 5650 hectares of land affecting a total of 43,782 farmers in the division.
DAE had estimated crop loss worth Tk 350 million. But farmers claimed that it would be at least double.
BSS from Narsingdi reports: Harvesting of early variety (short duration) Aman paddy BRRI Dhan-62 and BINA Dhan-7 has began in the district though the same will get full momentum from mid November.
The crop is now ready for harvesting and the growing late variety Aman plants are also in bloom predicting an excellent production of the cash crop, Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) official said.
Deputy Director of DAE Latafat Hossain told BSS that so far 5 to 6 percent Aman paddy has already been harvested in the district.
He said harvesting of Aman paddy BRRI Dhan-62 began in a simple ceremony at Shokandi union of Monohardi upazila in the district from the 1st November. After threshing it was found that about 3.50 to 4 tonnes of Aman paddy have produced per hectare here.
Farmers are happy that they are getting good production of Aman this season as crop has been growing excellent under the favorable climate condition everywhere in the district.
DAE sources said, farmers of the district have cultivated 41,250 hectares of land in the current season against the target of 39,400 hectares land fixed by the department for the district.
The Deputy Director hopes that if there is no climate hazard in the district in the current month of November, over 100,000 (One Lakh) tonnes of Aman rice will be produced in the district.
He said Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) had supplied quality seeds to the farmers at fair prices and different commercial banks including Bangladesh Krishi Bank disbursed easy term of loan to the farmers.
Beside, the necessary measures have been taken to distributing fertilizers, insecticides and other agriculture inputs among the growers. In addition DAE has been providing training among the farmers for adopting modern technologies in paddy cultivation.
BSS from Joypurhat adds: The farmers of the district are expecting a bumper production of Aman this year as they have finally cultivated the paddy on 70,970 hectares of land in the district exceeding the cultivation target fixed at 69,863 hectares.
Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) office sources said the target of producing the Aman rice was fixed at 197,582 tonnes. Now, the growers are expecting to harvest a bumper production of Aman than the fixed target.
Of the lands, farmers cultivated high yielding variety on 66,165 hectares of land, hybrid variety on 3,955 hectares and local variety on 850 hectares.
The farmers could exceed the cultivation target due to favorable climate condition, supply of adequate quantity of improved quality Aman seeds, distribution of fertilizers from different state-run agencies including the BADC and BCIC.
The growers successfully protected their cultivated Aman paddy from various pest attacks and other diseases by applying the integrated pest management (IPM) methods following the suggestions of the crop specialists of the DAE.
Sadar upazila agriculture officer Serajul Islam said from the beginning of the T-Aman season, the crops specialists and field-workers of the DAE continued rendering field-level services to the Aman cultivators to let them know about the modern methods of Aman cultivation for boosting production reducing the production costs.
