Staff Reporter :After a fretful wait for 25 days, the baby girl Suraiya who survived a bullet injury while in the womb, was handed over to her mother Nazma Khatun at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) on Sunday. The baby girl was undergoing treatment in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of DMCH since July 26. Cradling her baby in her arms, this was the first time Nazma hugged Suraiya. Nazma is being treated in the Gynaecology ward. Suraiya suffered bullet injuries when her eight months pregnant mother Nazma was shot in the abdomen during a factional clash of the Awami Jubo League in Magura town on July 23. “It is my first cuddle with my daughter. I’m very happy now as I got back my baby. I’m seeking prayers from all of you for my daughter’s recovery. I also want justice and immediate arrest of the culprits,” Nazma told journalists in tears.Nazma and her bullet-hit daughter miraculously survived after a two hours caesarean section at the hospital. The newborn, whose condition was very critical, was sent to the DMCH on July 26 without her mother. Following doctors’ suggestion, Nazma was later taken to the hospital to breastfeed her daughter on August 3. Doctors kept the mother away from the daughter for health safety of the newborn child.Director of DMCH Brigadier General Mizanur Rahman handed over the baby to her mother’s lap as the bullet injured girl’s condition improved significantly. Professor Abdul Hanif, Associate Professor Dr Kaniz Hasina Sheuli and others physicians were also present during the joyful moment.Talking to journalists, Professor Abdul Hanif said that they are now very happy as the baby is now on her mother’s lap. “The baby girl is taking 10 ml breast-milk every two hours which was initially 2 ml every three hours and her jaundice and edema had declined. The baby’s condition is now better and her weight has started increasing,” the physician said.Replying to a query whether the baby is out of danger or not, the doctor said as the baby is premature there is apprehension of infection. “Three nurses have been posted at NICU to oversee the baby round the clock. Besides, visitors’ entrance has been restricted. We will examine the baby girl’s eyes on Wednesday,” he said.Meanwhile, Bachchu Bhuiyan, husband of Nazma, expressed gratitude to Almighty Allah and thanked doctors for his wife and daughter’s recovery.  But he expressed his dissatisfaction, as the main accused Azibor and Mohammad Ali; both Jubo League activists are still at large.  “We are worried as the main accused are still at large. We want justice,” he said.At least seven persons have so far been arrested in connection with the incident. A case was filed against 16 people with Magura Sadar Police Station on July 26.
