Staff Reporter :
Bulldozers will be used immediately to free the city footpaths from illegal occupation, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Annisul Huq on Monday warned.

“We have already freed 95 per cent footpaths from illegal occupation. But some influential occupiers have not cleared the rest 5 per cent footpath yet under the DNCC area. As they occupying the footpaths, are still doing business, bulldozer will be used immediately to oust them,” he warned while addressing a function at British Council in the city yesterday.

He said at first they requested the occupiers to clear the footpaths but many of them did not comply.

“Amid all sorts of odds, we are working hard to make the capital Dhaka, a beautiful city as the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina herself has extended her all out cooperation,” he said.

“We don’t care. We will take this out.”

He said Dhaka would be a ‘different city’ when he finishes his term three years and seven months from now.

Earlier in November last year, the DNCC Mayor had faced tough protests from truck owners and workers while trying to clear the illegal occupiers of the Farmgate-Karwan Bazar Road from Tejgaon’s Saat Rasta.

“Evicting the occupiers from footpaths is a very tough job. But all illegal occupiers of all footpaths in Dhaka will be evicted immediately,” the Mayor asserted.
