Bangladesh University of Engineering Technology (BUET) Sher-e-Bangla Hall Provost Dr Zafar Iqbal Khan has resigned amid the ongoing students protest.
BURT Teachers’ Association President Dr AKM Masud disclosed the matter to the students on Wednesday.
Abrar Fahad, a second year student of electrical and electronic engineering department of the university, was beaten to death on Monday.
Some Chhatra League leaders have been accused of beating him for his alleged involvement with Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami. Abrar’s death sparked protest across Bangladesh. The protesters have demanded justice for Abrar and capital punishment for the murderers.
As of now, 13 people have been arrested in connection to the murder. Meanwhile, BUET Alumni Association has demanded the resignation of Buet Vice-Chancellor Saiful Islam. Signed by Buet Alumni Association President Professor Jamilur Reza Chowdhury, the association in a statment placed their seven-point demand protesting Abrar’s murder, at the campus on Wednesday.
They demanded the overhauling of the administration and the appointment of competent, honest and impartial people to maintain the quality of education.
The other demands are ensure justice by settling the cases in the shortest possible time under a speedy tribunal, expulsion of the Abrar’s killers from BUET, Ban on the activities of all political party associated student bodies, teachers and employees, ensure the personal security of all students in the campus by banning torturing students under the guise of ragging and ensure justice for all those who became victims of student politics without any delay.
Earlier, the protesters revised their eight-point demand, placed on Tuesday night, and put forward a 10-point demand, including the withdrawal of Sher-E-Bangla Hall provost Md Zafar Iqbal Khan.
Earlier, second year student of electrical and electronic engineering department of the university, Abrar Fahad, was beaten to death by Chhatra League leaders on Monday. They beat Abrar for his alleged involvement with Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami.
Following the incident, Abrar’s father Barkat Ullah filed a murder case against 19 people with Chawkbazar police station on Monday evening. Later, Bangladesh Chhatra League expelled 11 of its members permanently from the organization for their involvement in Abrar’s murder.
Abrar’s death shocked and sparked protests all across Bangladesh. The students of different universities have protested, demanding justice for Abrar and capital punishment for the murderers.
As of now, 14 people have been arrested in connection to the murder.
