The national budget for FY2017-18 would see a Tk22,851 crore allotment for the public order and security sector, which is a 10.25pc increase on the Tk20,727 crore allotment in the revised budget for FY2016-17.
In his speech on the proposed budget at Jatiya Sangsad on Thursday, Finance Minister AMA Muhith said: “In order to enhance the capacity of the police force to face contemporary challenges, there is a plan to recruit new personnel on the basis of actual need while providing the force with appropriate training and equipping them with modern weapons and technology.”
“We have also taken the initiative to construct 56 barracks across different districts of the country to resolve the housing problems of female police officers,” he added.
According to the budget proposal, the Public Security Division would receive a Tk18,276 crore allotment, with Tk1,045 crore of the amount earmarked for development expenditure. The revised amount in the budget for the last fiscal year was Tk16,773 crore, after Tk19,276 crore had been proposed.
The Security Service Division would receive Tk2,866 crore as per the budget, with Tk994 crore from the amount allotted for development expenditure. While no allotment was specified for the newly established division in the last fiscal year’s budget proposal, the revised budget for FY2016-17 showed Tk2,250 crore had been designated for the division.
Furthermore, the Law and Justice Division is set to receive a Tk1,421 crore budget for this fiscal year, with Tk505 crore allotted for development expenditure. In FY2016-17, the budget was revised down to Tk1,423 crore from the proposed Tk1,517 crore.
The Legislative and Parliamentary Division would get Tk22 crore with no allotment for development expenditure, as opposed to the revised Tk26 crore in the last fiscal year. Tk24 crore had been proposed for the division in FY2016-17.
In addition, the Supreme Court would receive Tk165 crore with no allotment for development expenditure, after the amount had been revised up to Tk168 crore from the proposed Tk155 crore in the budget for the previous fiscal year.
The Anti Corruption Commission would be given Tk101 crore with Tk20 crore allotted for development expenditure in the budget for FY2017-18, a significant increase from the revised Tk87 crore in the previous fiscal year’s budget. Tk91 crore had been proposed.
