Bangladesh Television’s 56th birthday is today (December 25). On the occasion of its birthday, a press conference was held
at BTV office in the capital’s Rampura
area on Thursday.
Director General of BTV Haroon-or-Rashid, Director (Programme & Planning) Jagadish Chandra Esh, Deputy Director Generation (Programme) Dr Syeda Tasmina Ahmed, Deputy Director Generation (News) Anup Kumar Khastagir, General Manager of Dhaka Centre Nasir Mahmud, among others, spoke at the press conference.
BTV DG said that during Corona
pandemic, a programme titled Ei Somoy is being telecasted in the state-run channel every Monday to Friday at 7:00pm. Live news analysis Khobor Protidin is being
telecasted every night at 12:00am. Due to Coronavirus, BTV will not celebrate the day formally. From 6:00pm to 8:00pm
special programmes will be telecasted live today on the occasion of its birthday.
BTV started its journey on December 25 in 1964 in the name of Dhaka Television, first of its kind in the subcontinent. It started broadcasting as Pakistan Television in what was then East Pakistan on December 25 in 1964. It was renamed Bangladesh Television after the independence in 1971. BTV was established with a purpose to provide wholesome home entertainment and educational programmes. The very first drama which was aired was written by Munier Chowdhury, titled Ektala
Dotala. It was aired in 1965.
The quality work kept coming out of the state-owned TV station. Throughout the 70s and 80s, BTV enthralled audiences of all ages with its innovation and quality. BTV started colour transmission in 1980 through a programme titled Desher Gaan produced by Selim Ashraf. In 2004, BTV launched its satellite transmission under the name of BTV World. During its
heyday, BTV had the likes of Mostafa Monwar, Atiqul Haq Chowdhury, Humayun Ahmed, Fazle Lohani as the brains behind their programmes.
