UNB, Dhaka :
The High Court on Tuesday issued a contempt of court rule against three officials of Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Ltd (BTCL), including its managing director, for flouting it order over snapping the signaling connection of ‘Jamir Telecom’.
An HC bench comprising Justice Ashfaqul Islam and Justice Ashraful Kamal issued the rule following a writ petition. The court also asked the BTCL officials to explain as to why punitive action should not be taken against them for contempt of court charge.
BTCL Managing Director Mahfuzuddin Ahmed,
General Manager AA Mohammed Moashir and Director (overseas) Mohammad Ziaul Anam have been asked to come with the reply in a week.
On March 17, 2010, BTCL authorities snapped the signaling link of ‘Jamir Telecom’ owned by Noufel Jamir, son of former Speaker Barrister Jamir Uddin Sircar.
On April 22, 2010, the High Court asked the authorities concerned to provide the connection. However, the BTCL had provided the connection six months later of the HC order.
Later, ‘Jamir Telecom’ lodged a complaint to BTCL arbitration tribunal seeking compensation in this regard. On March 3, 2012 three-member tribunal passed an interim order not to disconnect the line of the telecom company until the trial ends.
On March 11, 2012, the High Court also ordered not to snap the connection while the matter is pending with the tribunal. However, defying the HC order, the BTCL snapped the lines of ‘Jamir Telecom’ on March 20, 2014.
Barrister Ajmalul Hossain stood for the petitioner.
